The earliest residents of the Maplewood-South Orange area were The Lenapes -- Native Americans who once populated Mid-Atlantic coast from New York Bay to Delaware Bay.

The Battle of Springfield - June 1780

The Revolutionary War Battle of Springfield, in June 1780, took place little more than a stone's throw from Maplewood's borders. Although it has been little noticed by historians, it was a crucial turning point of the War for Independence.

Slavery in New Jersey: A Troubled History is an illustrated 40-page book that traces the evolution of slavery in New Jersey, which began with Dutch settlement in the seventeenth century and continued through the end of the Civil War.
