About the event

Would you like to be one of three en plein air painters chosen for a program at the Durand-Hedden House’s Grasmere Park? The Durand-Hedden House is an historic house museum in Maplewood, New Jersey, hometown of renowned Hudson River School artist Asher B. Durand. We are seeking plein air artists to submit their work for review. Three artists will be chosen to paint and demonstrate their technique in the park at a public program, and display their work in the house museum.

  • Event date: Sunday, October 2nd from 1 to 4 pm; rain date Sunday, October 9th
  • Location: Grasmere Park, 523 Ridgewood Road, Maplewood, NJ
  • Artists are asked to submit 5 examples of their landscape/plein air paintings via slides or another format for consideration by the selection committee
  • A selection committee of three jurors will choose three artists
  • Each artist will select a place to work in Grasmere Park from 1 to 4 pm on Sunday, Oct. 2nd, and will spend the afternoon painting and talking to visitors In addition, these artists will exhibit their work in a 3-person group show inside the Durand-Hedden House, home to works by Asher B. Durand, during the afternoon The exhibit will remain on display through November 6, and will be part of the Nov. 5-6 SOMA Artists' Studio Tour.​
  • Each artist will give a 15-minute easel painting demo to visitors about their process, to include: selecting a vantage point, composition, palette set and how they rough-in the painting
  • A reception will follow from 4 to 5 pm
  • Each artist will receive an honorarium; there is no fee for entry
  • Deadline for application: Tuesday, September 20, 6:00 pm ET

Note: Winners will be notified on Saturday, Sept. 24. Paintings to be displayed must be delivered to the Durand-Hedden House, 523 Ridgewood Road, Maplewood, on Friday, Sept. 30, and must be removed on Sunday, Nov. 6 between 4:00 and 6:00 pm.

Jurors: Mary Birmingham, Andrew Zimmerman, Mary Pat Porinchak

Mary Birmingham is an independent curator based in Montclair, NJ. She began her career at the Whitney Museum and worked for nine years in the curatorial department at the Montclair Art Museum. She was Director of Exhibitions at the Hunterdon Art Museum from 2007-2010, and Curator at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey from 2010-2022. Birmingham has an MA in Art History from Hunter College and a BA in Art History from Seton Hall University. She is the author of Dynamic Impulse: The Drawings of Stuart Davis and numerous exhibition catalogues. She has organized more than one hundred exhibitions and has written and lectured on a variety of topics in American and contemporary art.

Andrew Zimmerman is an accomplished sculptor and painter whose work has been exhibited in many solo and group exhibitions in New York, Italy, Washington, D.C., and many other places over the course of his career. He was awarded a MacDowell Fellowship in 2019 and received a Pollock Krasner Grant. He has BFAs in Industrial Design from the California College of the Arts, and in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design. He also studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. Andrew is represented by the Sears Peyton Gallery in New York City.

Mary Pat Porinchak is a painter whose work has been shown recently at The Painting Center and Dodomu Gallery in New York, and was an Educator and Lecturer at the Whitney Museum of American Art for over a decade. She holds an MA in studio art from NYU.
