Down in the Valley: The History of the Dunnell Road Area

Long before the police station and fire department were located beside Memorial Park following Maplewood's incorporation, the area had been the site of farms and a variety of mills, including the Phoenix Paper Mill, which drew water and power from the East Branch of the Rahway River. The Dunnell Road environs transitioned from agrarian to industrial and then to civic, transportation and residential uses.
