Dear Durand-Hedden Members and Supporters,

Another exciting season at the Durand-Hedden House & Garden is about to begin! We are proud to be an essential part of the rich cultural life of Maplewood, South Orange, and our neighboring towns. Our partnerships with other community organizations add richness to our programs and broaden our reach.

Our Fall programming begins on September 27. A list of upcoming events is always available and up-to-date on our website, DurandHedden.org.

In mid-2027, we will undertake the biggest project at our house museum since its restoration in the early 1980s: removing the 100-year-old slate roof and the even older cedar roof beneath and replacing it with a new, historically appropriate cedar shingle roof, guided by our preservation architect, our restoration carpenter, and the Maplewood Historic Preservation Commission. We are grateful to the Township of Maplewood, which is providing major financial support for this major expense. However, Durand-Hedden will be responsible for a significant share of the cost. The project will substantially reduce our reserves and strain our budget.

As a part of our community, you know that Durand-Hedden House does more than care for our 232-year-old building and park. It preserves our community’s history and brings people together through distinctive programs and exhibitions that give that history meaning. In the past year, we have connected with far more people than ever before in person, but also on our website and through our YouTube channel. More than 1,500 individuals came to our programs in the 2025-2026 season, and more than 10,000 visited our ever-expanding website.

This is a time when we truly need your continued support. We know you believe history matters and that you share our commitment to preserving it for the future. We are pleased to introduce an expanded membership program that recognizes your generosity at every level.
